Temperature, storage, and natural gas futures prices

چکیده

Previous literature suggests that daily changes in US natural gas (NG) futures prices and their variance can be explained by oil volatilities, storage announcements, temperature shocks. These studies measure shocks using the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration definitions of heating degree day (HDD) cooling (CDD). We show how hourly temperatures used to better long as well much depart above and/or below “comfort level” within a day, effects variability thermal inertia. Hourly also allow us construct measures extreme match timing release other market information. Another innovation is we use more economically relevant weights convert regional national averages, expected values variables via econometric models instead historical averages. Our results proposed HDD CDD are important for explaining weekly NG variance.

A Cointegrated Regime-Switching Model Approach with Jumps Applied to Natural Gas Futures Prices

Energy commodities and their futures naturally show cointegrated price movements. However, there is empirical evidence that the prices of futures with different maturities might have, e.g., different jump behaviours in different market situations. Observing commodity futures over time, there is also evidence for different states of the underlying volatility of the futures. In this paper, we the...

Effect of Temperature Shock and Inventory Surprises on Natural Gas and Heating Oil Futures Returns

The aim of this paper is to examine the impact of temperature shock on both near-month and far-month natural gas and heating oil futures returns by extending the weather and storage models of the previous study. Several notable findings from the empirical studies are presented. First, the expected temperature shock significantly and positively affects both the near-month and far-month natural g...

Natural Gas Prices on Three Continents

We investigate the pricing formation of natural gas markets on three different continents (Europe, Asia and North America). We find that natural gas markets showed a strong relationship with the crude oil market between 1992 and 2001 and natural gas prices tended to thermal parity with crude oil prices. From 2002 natural gas markets exhibited a less pronounced relationship with the crude oil ma...

Development and Comparison of Methods Based on Grey and Fractal Models for Predicting Natural Gas Prices

Today there is consensus regarding the importance of predicting the price of energy carriers for economic development, including natural gas as a preferred energy source on environmental grounds. In this paper we analyze the nonlinear behavior of natural gas prices over time by use of the Grey Method (GM), Developed Grey Method (DGM), Fractal Discrete Grey Method (FDGM) and a compound Method II...
